Big Ten Basketball Slate Jan. 16, 2019

After only one game last night, a real snoozer by the way (Purdue beat Rutgers 89-54) the Big Ten will have feature double-header tonight.

In the first game the No. 23 Iowa Hawkeyes will travel to University Park, Pennsylvania to face the Penn State Nittany Lions at 7:00 p.m.

Following that game the University of Minnesota will travel to Champaign Illinois to take on the University of Illinois at 9:00 p.m.

Both games will be featured on the Big Ten Network.

Let’s breakdown take a closer look at these upcoming contests.

No. 23 Iowa vs. Penn State:

Iowa comes into this contest on a three-game winning streak. The Hawkeyes recently took down Ohio State at home.

Meanwhile Penn State has lost four games in a row.

On the season Iowa sits at 14-3 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Penn State sits at 7-10 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Last Meeting: Feb. 3, 2018. In that game Penn State won 82-58.

Key Players: Junior forward Tyler Cook leads Iowa with 17.1 ppg.

His counterpart will be junior forward Lamar Stevens, who leads Penn State with 18.6 ppg.

Minnesota vs. Illinois:

Minnesota enters this contest fresh off a win against Rutgers.

In the game sophomore guard Isaiah Washington was ejected for throwing a ball at the head of Montez Mathis.

Illinois comes into this contest on a five-game losing streak. They’re most recent loss was to No. 2 Michigan, arguably the best team in the country.

Both teams are on different paths this season as Minnesota sits at 13-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Illinois sits at 4-12 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Last Meeting: Jan. 3, 2018. In that game Minnesota won 77-67.

Key Players: Junior guard Amir Coffey leads Minnesota with 16.4 ppg. Meanwhile sophomore guard Trent Frazier leads Illinois with 14.7 ppg.
