Illinois has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2013 and it appears the team will continue that streak in 2019.
However, head coach Brad Underwood appears to have finally gotten the program back on it’s feet. Despite going 14-18 last season and currently 8-15 this season the Illinois basketball program has hope.
That was on display last night when the Fighting Illini shocked the world and upset No. 9 Michigan State at home.
Freshman guard Ayo Dosunmu paved the way to victory with 24 points. Meanwhile freshman forward Giorgi Bezhanishvili added 16 points in the victory.
Dosunmu and Bezhanishvili along with sophomore guard Trent Frazier are three reasons why Illinois fans should be pumped for the future.
In fact, Frazier has been one of the most under appreciated guards in the Big Ten this season. The team’s leading scorer is coming off a 30-point performance against Minnesota last week.
The program has been on a roll recently. Beating three out of the last four games all to worthy Big Ten opponents (No. 13 Maryland, Nebraska and No. 9 Michigan State).
Still there is plenty of work that needs to be done in Champaign, but it appears the worst days are behind the program.
