With 16 games left to decide the playoff picture, the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets jump into the biggest month of their season. With a 5-5 record in their last 10, the end of the regular season is coming sooner rather than later. The question everyone is asking around the Eastern Conference is, “who will be the eight teams in the playoffs?”
With a home-and-home with the Pittsburgh Penguins, it’s now or never for the young and loaded Blue Jackets. Pittsburgh leads the the season series 2-0 as they finish the regular season series. This series may not be over as both teams are in a tight battle to decide the final spots for the playoffs.
Coming off a rather rough game against the New Jersey Devils, the Blue Jackets swept the season series with a 2-1 victory in a shootout Tuesday night. Shots and goals were both at a minimum Tuesday as the Jackets tallied 18 total shots throughout the entire game.
Cam Atkinson tallied his 36th goal on the season, of which is his career high in goals since entering the NHL. His career high in points is 62, after Tuesday’s win, Atkinson has 61 points on the campaign with plenty of games left to play. In the last 10 games, Atkinson has tallied seven points during that span.
With only six remaining home games for the 2018-2019 season, the Jackets hold a 17-16-2 record at home. All six home games are against teams in the playoff race as of March 7, 2019.
Most of the remaining season will be played on the road for the Blue Jackets, that being said, a 20-10-1 record looks good for a team who is only two points out of the playoff picture.
Every game is important from here on out. If the Blue Jackets want to have any hope of clinching a playoff spot, the stakes are high and every game is crucial. Points are in huge demand as the season comes to a close.
