It is time to go all in for Jaguars Pro Bowl DE Yannick Ngakoue and make this team a true contender.
The draft was very up and down for Eagles fans, but ultimately it ended up being good and the Eagles walked away looking a lot better on paper, despite what many fans may say. After the draft was over, the Eagles were left with very few holes on the roster, and those are Defensive End and Cornerback. The need at these positions are not dire, as the team could begin the season today and do pretty well. A trade for Ngakoue, though, would push the Birds into legitimate contender territory again.
Yannick attended the University of Maryland, was drafted by the Jaguars in 2016, and has gotten off to an excellent start to his Career. In his first four years he has accumulated 37.5 sacks, 42 TFLs, and 14 forced fumbles while becoming one of the best young defensive ends in the game, earning a trip to the pro bowl in 2017. Ngakoue would be the perfect upgrade for a defensive line that struggled to make a big impact last year.
Ngakoue has been trying to force a trade out of Jacksonville for quite some time now, and has expressed that he will not play until he is traded elsewhere. What should make the Eagles eager to jump is the fact that he seems to have a lot of love for Philadelphia. Numerous social media ‘stories’ of Yannick’s included Philadelphia themed images with an hourglass captioning it. While he has done the same thing with a couple other franchises, the Eagles seemed to be the one reoccurring the most, which has most fans on board with getting him.
The main reason that Ngakoue is not a part of the team already is the Jaguars’ steep asking price in return for the DE. It was said that they would accept no less than a first round pick to start, but that was leading up to this year’s draft. After weeks of being on the trade block and watching the Draft come and go, Yannick is growing impatient and the Jags’ asking price will likely start to dip. Keep an eye on the Eagles to make a move once that happens.
Here is what I would offer the Jaguars if I’m Howie Roseman and the Eagles:
Jaguars receive – Derek Barnett, 2021 3rd round pick, 2021 5th round pick
Eagles receive – Yannick Ngakoue
Philly sends one of their two 5th round picks and their 3rd round pick for next year to Jacksonville for a budding superstar. Although the team loses a third round pick, they would have a whole year to get that back so there should not be any problem with that.
Derek Barnett last year – 30 tackles, 10 TFL, 6.5 sacks, 2 FF
Yannick Ngakoue last year – 41 tackles, 13 TFL, 8 sacks, 4 FF, 1 FR, 1 int, 1 TD
This should be a deal that Eagles fans love everything about. Ngakoue seems to love Philly, he’s missed one game in his four years, and the Defensive line becomes scary. Ngakoue, Cox, Hargrave, and Graham is a stout front four. Behind them you still have Avery, Jackson, Ridgeway, and Josh Sweat, who showed some promise at times last season.
Derek Barnett is a good young player. But let’s be honest Eagles fans, his lack of discipline drives you insane. The Eagles make out well in this deal, and still have a whole year to worry about the third round pick in 2021.
